The Wellington Hotel celebrated it’s fifth anniversary of open mic nights today. A packed evening full of musicians came down. Some of them haven’t been for a while. Hat’s off to John Cruickshank (who funnily enough was the only one wearing a hat) for putting on the night.

This night was also a debut for a new song called “Uncharted Waters”. One of the better first performances of a song I’ve had.

Note the top photograph was taken by John Cruickshank and not me.

Exit State’s first gig at Ramapage along with another debut with “The Saviours”. A strange choice with Hello Bamboo to kick off the start to a hilarious intro. Well… they’ve got to play with someone I guess.

I was a bit careless this gig. Unlike the previous gig where I was testing a new camera. This time I was just using my old familiar equipment and so I didn’t bother being too careful about being steady. I’m sure a few more shots would have come out sharper if I really tried. Oh well that’s punishment for being lazy.

Got an email yesterday afternoon asking me to ring up about an interview. Thing looked highly suspicious from the start (it was sent from a Yahoo address for a start!). It was something like this

I decided not to even call it in the end. The reason I though was they didn’t necessarily have my mobile number and so I didn’t want to give that away/prove my email was live. After doing a bit more research something I didn’t know that I do now. Numbers starting with 070 are not mobile numbers but could be premium rate lines (or being forwarded to premium rate numbers).

OOOOooo New Dark Tranquillity song. It’s certainly one of those more atmospheric songs eschewing any definitive strong melodies or riffs for more ambient sounds. Though I take it it’s not a single per se it still seems an odd track to release for a first impression of the new album. That said I really like it. It’s different again but there’s still Dark Tranquillity elements in there as well. Roll on the album.

At 12 noon today our cat Zeus was put down at the vets. She had an infestation of a rare mite for over a year (presumably even before we got her). This mite caused her considerable irritation which made her scratch herself till she bled. At one point her face was so bad someone reported us to the RSPCA thinking she was being neglected.The cone was there really to restrict her scratching but in recent months she had even started to figure out how to get around it anyway.

We have been to the vet countless times (who then contacted the skin specialist countless times) and have run through courses of several different treatments, all of which have failed. In the end, after the last licensed treatment available had failed and after discussions with friends and family, me and Ryan decided the best thing now was to put her down.

At 12 today I said my goodbyes to her in the vets room, gave her a few treats then handed her to Ryan. I left the room but Ryan wanted to be there till the very end.

Eruption of the Tvashtar volcano on Jupiter’s moon Io, photographed by New Horizons, 1 March 2007, during its gravity-assist Jupiter flyby on its way to Pluto. I’ve brightened the pictures so that some detail on the darker part of Io is clearer.

The gif covers about 8 minutes of real time. If you count pixels and look up Io’s diameter, it looks like the plume’s “only” being thrown up to an altitude of 200km or so. But in fact the volcano is in the opposite hemisphere to the one we see here (albeit at a high latitude of about 67 degrees), and the plumes are reaching a height of over 300km.

I’ve listened to it about a dozen times so far and I’m not so sure about it really. That start riff sounds suitably brutal, especially for Amorphis, but once the vocals start… Maybe listen to it a few more times.
